Denise
Brisker
October 2, 1949 – April 15, 2026
Denise Brisker, 76, gained her wings on April 15, 2026, following a brief illness, surrounded by the family she loved so deeply.
Born on October 2, 1949, in Chicago, Illinois, Denise built her life around family, connection, and joy. She was a devoted mother and proud grandmother, and nothing meant more to her than time spent with those she loved. Her move to Waterloo, Iowa, in 1996 for the birth of her first and only grandson reflected just how central family was to her life.
Denise had a warm, lively spirit that drew people in. She loved music, dancing, and bringing people together, and she was known for her ability to turn any gathering into a celebration. Whether among friends, coworkers, or family, she was truly the life of the party and made people feel welcome and at ease.
She enjoyed reading, especially novels by James Patterson, and found simple happiness in her love of plants and good company. Denise attended Phillips High School in Chicago and gave her life to Christ at a young age at St. Matthew’s Missionary Baptist Church. She later became a member of St. Matthew Church of God in Christ, where she sang in the choir.
Denise worked as a Records Clerk for the City of Chicago for 12 years. After moving to Waterloo, she was employed by Western Home Communities for 15 years, retiring in 2011. In retirement, she spent some time working as a bartender, where her outgoing personality and sense of fun made her a favorite to many.
Denise is survived by her daughter, Sharisse (Richard) Stevenson; her beloved grandson, Richard R. Stevenson; her sister, Crystal Brisker-Cotton of Chicago, Illinois; three nieces, Michelle Brisker-Matthews of Jackson, Mississippi, Felicia Cotton and Shalonda Cotton of Chicago, Illinois; and three nephews, Philip Cotton of Chicago, Illinois, Kevin (Stephanie) Brisker Jr. of Daytona Beach, Florida, and Michael Brisker of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Ruby L. Brisker; her brothers, Paul Brisker, Michael Brisker, and Kevin Brisker Sr.; and her sister, Cynthia Brisker.
Denise will be remembered for her love of family, her joyful spirit, and the way she brought light and laughter wherever she went.
In loving memory, Denise’s sister Crystal writes:
To my sister,
Side by side, siblings will always be connected by heart. You’re gone from sight, but forever in my soul. I will hold your laughter close and never let it fade. Your spirit walks with me eternally, and soothes me in your absence; death leaves a heartache no one can heal, but love leaves a memory no one can steal.
The song is ended, but the melody lingers on.
Love you,
Your sister, Crystal
