Donald Herbsleb

Donald James Herbsleb, 85, was called home to heaven on February 12, 2024. As a believer in the Lord Jesus, he was given the promise of sins forgiven and life everlasting.  Donald was born on June 2, 1938, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Alfred and Viola Herbsleb. Don graduated from West High School in 1956. He attended Chicago Tech and Gates Community College.  He was united in marriage to Patricia Ann Barnett on June 14,1958 who was the love of his life for 65 years. They always worked together.

Don worked at Iowa Public Service in Waterloo for 15 years.   He and his father, Alfred, built several homes in Waterloo under the name “Viking Homes.” Don and Pat were the owners of “The Kitchen Shoppe” in Waterloo and Cedar Falls.  They retired in 2004 and moved to Weslaco, Texas.   While in Texas, Don pursued his love of woodworking, creating “Scrollsaw Creations.”  He was often referred to as a master craftsman.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Mercedes, Texas for about 20 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred & Viola Herbsleb, one son, Steven, and an infant daughter.

Don is survived by his wife, Patricia, his children, Tamara (Tim) Sorenson of Texas; and Mark (Paige) Herbsleb of Iowa, grandchildren, Joshua Sorenson, Anna (Ben) Grimes, Heather (Kyle) Maakestad, Leah Morrisett, Haley (Brian) Holscher, Logan Herbsleb, Luke Herbsleb, Skyler Herbsleb, and Mallory Herbsleb, 11 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.  

The family would like to thank Weslaco Nursing and Rehab Center and A Healing Touch Home Care and Hospice for the help and care they provided during Don’s illness.

Memorials to Immanuel Lutheran Church and School, 703 W. 3^rd Street, Mercedes, TX 78570, would be appreciated.

The visitation will be on Monday, February 26, 2024, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories.  There will be a graveside service on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at 11:00 AM, at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Waterloo.
