Gabrielle Shante McClarin of Chicago, Illinois, formerly of Waterloo, passed away on Sunday, May 10, 2026, after a brave and heartfelt year-long battle with cancer. Surrounded by the comfort and love of her family, Gabrielle faced her illness with a strength that inspired all who knew her. At just 40 years old, she left a profound mark on the lives she touched.

Born on March 7, 1986, in Chicago to Archie McClarin III and Joann Matthews, Gabrielle was cherished from the very start. She completed her education in 2004, graduating from Bowen High School, and later pursued college where she earned her massage therapy license. For many years, she brought comfort and healing to others through her home-based massage practice. In her final two years, Gabrielle dedicated herself as a Homecare specialist, showing the same compassion and care that defined her spirit.

Gabrielle was a fighter in every sense. Her diagnosis nearly a year before her passing marked the beginning of a courageous journey. She celebrated a triumphant moment when she rang the bell five months prior, a symbol of hope and determination. Though the cancer returned, Gabrielle's resolve never wavered, and she faced each day with unmatched courage until the very end.

Known for her vivacious personality and infectious energy, Gabrielle was often described as “the life of the party,” and her family fondly called these moments “The Gaby Show.” A true social butterfly, she abhorred solitude and always sought the joyful company of those around her. Whether traveling on cruises, attending concerts, or chasing wherever the wind might take her, Gaby embraced every moment with zest. A small but beloved passion was her sweet love for strawberries—a delightful quirk attributed to her mother’s pregnancy cravings.

Above all else, Gabrielle cherished her mother, Joann Matthews. Their bond was unshakable; they were not only family but also best friends who shared countless experiences side by side.

Gabrielle is preceded in death by her grandparents Rosey Matthews, Johnny Mae McClarin, Archie McClarin Jr., and other beloved family members. She leaves behind a loving legacy through her mother, Joann Matthews; father, Archie McClarin III; her brother, Matthew (Tamera) McClarin; her adored nieces and nephews Malina, Brea, ShaunTrell, Brandon, and TayShaun; along with numerous best friends, cousins, nieces, and an extended circle of family and friends who will forever cherish her memory.

A Celebration of Life for Gabrielle will be held in June in Chicago, honoring a remarkable woman whose laughter, spirit, and love remain indelible in the hearts of all who knew her. In remembering Gabrielle Shante McClarin, we hold close the light she shared—a testament to a life beautifully lived.
