Gary Douglas Bender, of Waterloo, passed away on Monday, November 24, 2025, at home surrounded by family. He was 79 years old.
Gary was born on April 1, 1946. He was raised by wonderful parents, John and Darlyne (Bertch) Bender. After completing high school, he pursued further education at a business school in Florida. Upon returning to his hometown of Waterloo, Gary dedicated many years to working for Rath, where he made lasting contributions before transitioning to truck driving, ultimately enjoying a well-earned retirement.
Gary was known for his loyalty and spending cherished moments at Lofty’s, where he enjoyed drinking Pepsi, smoking cigarettes, and engaging in conversation. His passion for NASCAR was evident, with Jeff Gordon standing out as his favorite driver. Those who knew him could always recognize him by his signature NASCAR jacket.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Darlyne, and one son, Gary Bender.
His legacy is carried on by his family. Gary is survived by two sons, John E. (Hannah) Bender of Bloomer, WI, and John F. (Tracy) Bender of Kirksville, MO; as well as one daughter, Carrie (Bobby) Elder of Waterloo, IA.
Gary's life was commemorated through a private family burial at the Garden of Memories, honoring his wishes. As noted, there will be no public services. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends, who cherished his presence in their lives.
