Helen Doris McCulley

January 20, 1936 — June 16, 2025

Hudson

Helen Doris McCulley, 89, of Hudson, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 16, 2025, at Cedar Valley Hospice in Waterloo.

Born on January 20, 1936, in Bremer County, Iowa, Helen was the daughter of Chauncey and Bertha (Schauer) Myers. She graduated from Waterloo West High School with the Class of 1954. In 1956, she married Larry McCulley, and together they had three children. They later divorced.

Throughout her life, Helen worked in several roles that reflected her dedication and care for others — from data processing at Rath Packaging and Viking Pump, to customer service at Ben Franklin, and later retiring from the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home as a certified nursing assistant.

Helen poured her heart into her family, whom she was endlessly proud of. A devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she was known for her strong work ethic, independent spirit, and meticulous attention to detail. Whether keeping her home fresh and clean or carefully planning for the future — from her retirement goals to ensuring everything was in order — Helen approached life with intention and care. Her deep faith and positive outlook helped her find blessings even in the most difficult moments.

She was fiercely loyal to those she loved and deeply valued the friendships she nurtured over the years. She especially enjoyed meeting up with her Silver Sneakers group, former coworkers, and her cherished high school “gal pals,” with whom she shared a lifelong bond. Helen’s beautiful smile, kind spirit, and quiet strength left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved daughter, Maurita Lubbers; her brothers, Donald, Alvin, Ivan, Robert, and Gerald Myers; her sisters, Grace Brown, Dorothy Dunnwald, Betty Brunscheon, and LaVonne Meehan; and several nieces and nephews.

Helen is lovingly remembered by her children, Dawn (Dennis) Young of Hudson and Chris (Barbara) McCulley of Hudson; her son-in-law, David Lubbers of Hudson; her grandchildren, Brett (Anna) Young, Brandon Young, Blake Young, Danielle McCulley, Bridget (Anthony) Araiza, Allan McCulley (Jessica Geidel), and Dakota Lubbers; her great-grandchildren, Blaiklee Schatz, Cecilia, Cedric, and Calvin Young, and Oliver Eldridge; along with many nieces and nephews.

Helen’s family extends heartfelt gratitude to Cedar Valley Hospice for the exceptional care and compassion shown during her time there.
