Henry Lee Greer, affectionately known to many as “HEN-I,” was born on April 6, 1963, in Waterloo, Iowa, to the loving embrace of his parents, Leroy Greer and Gracie Pearl Young. With a radiant personality and a spirit that drew people in, Henry became a true pillar in his community—his charisma and caring soul remembered by all who crossed his path.

A proud 1981 graduate of Waterloo East High School, Henry’s legacy was felt early on in the halls and on the basketball courts, where his natural athleticism and sportsmanship cemented him as a local legend. Teammates admired not just his skill, but the infectious energy and laughter he brought to every game; Henry was, without a doubt, the one everyone wanted by their side, both on and off the court.

Henry followed a life colored by varied jobs and warm friendships, always ready to lend a hand or offer a kind word. Yet, one of his most defining battles came when he faced cancer—a test of strength and faith which he overcame, living cancer-free for sixteen triumphant years. His courage and resilience were hallmarks of his story, inspiring everyone who knew him.

From an early age, Henry accepted Christ at Antioch Baptist Church under Rev. Eugene Williams, a guiding faith that served as his foundation through life’s highs and lows. His warmth most cherished, perhaps, within his beloved circle of nieces and nephews, upon whom he doted endlessly. Being a great uncle ran in his blood; Henry’s generosity knew no limits, always making sure his family felt deeply loved and cared for. He was a big kid at heart, always ready with a joke, a smile, or a helping hand.

Henry was a humble man with a magnetic presence, fondly regarded as a "ladies’ man" by his friends and family. He found immense enjoyment in the simple pleasures of life—shooting pool with friends, expertly manning the grill, and sharing his love of a good barbecue regardless of season or circumstance. Rain, snow, or shine, Henry’s mastery of the grill was well-known; he believed any time was the right time to gather and share a meal.

He is succeeded in life and lovingly remembered by his siblings: Grace Mae Tooson; Clayton Greer; Susan Crawford (Sam); Arthur Greer (Darlene); Freddie Franklin (Debbie); Ezzard Long (“Mac Attack”); Tim Moses; and his special friend, Karmen Teague. Though he has been called home, the memory of his laughter, warmth, and unwavering support lives on in each of them.

Henry was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy Greer and Gracie Pearl Young, as well as his brothers, Leroy and Tracy Greer, and his nephew, Clifford Greer Jr. Their reunification is bittersweet for those left behind, who find comfort in the memories and love that will never fade.

Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Henry are invited to gather in celebration and remembrance of his remarkable life. A viewing will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Parrott & Wood Chapel Of Memories, 965 Home Plaza, Waterloo, IA. The Homegoing service will follow at noon, honoring the legacy of a deeply cherished man. Immediately after, a repass will be held at Impact Church until 3:00 p.m., followed by another repass at Ferguson Fields, 1407 Linden Ave, Waterloo, IA.

Henry Lee Greer’s memory is woven into the hearts of all who knew him—a tapestry of laughter, strength, selflessness, and enduring love. May his legacy continue to inspire kindness, resilience, and the joy of simple moments shared together.
