Jesse Bentley of Waterloo passed away at UnityPoint on Monday, August 31, 2026, at the age of 61.

Born on February 21, 1965, to Tillman Bentley and Emma Atwood, Jesse grew up in Waterloo and remained deeply connected to the community that shaped him. Affectionately called “Jesse James” by family, he was a proud 1983 graduate of Central High School.

During his school years, Jesse met the love of his life, Debra“Debbie” Powers. Their young romance was filled with determination and devotion, as they found ways to be together.That love endured, and they were married on October 25, 1997, and celebrated 29 years together.

After high school, Jesse enlisted in the United States Army on October 2, 1984, serving his country for four years. His service was marked by dedication and earned him the Good Conduct Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Army Lapel Button, and Rifle M-16 Marksman recognition.

Following his military service, Jesse built a life through hard work. Over the years he worked in construction, the meat plant, John Deere, and later for Eagle Ottawa Tannery until its closure. He was a man who understood the value of honest labor and carried that same determination into every chapter of his life.

Jesse will be remembered for his big heart and his willingness to help anyone and everyone he could. He lived life in his own way, on his own terms, and that independent spirit was part of what made him so memorable to those who knew him. To so many, Jesse was simply a friend. He loved to cook and grill whenever he had the chance, bringing people together around food, laughter, and fellowship. He was also an avid Steelers fan, and that enthusiasm was one more way he shared joy with the people around him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Tillman and Emma Bentley; his brothers, E.C. Webb and R.U. Bentley; and his sister, Carolyn Bentley Tollefson

Jesse leaves behind his loving wife, Debra of Waterloo, along with his brothers, Kenneth Bentley and Timothy (Joann)Bentley, both of Des Moines. He is also survived by his sisters, Joyce (Twigg) Gardner and Annie Bentley Butler, both of Waterloo. He will be lovingly remembered as well by his sister and brother in law Cora and Ron Turner of Waterloo, and by his many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, extended family members, and countless friends whose lives were touched by his kindness, humor, and generous heart.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Parrott and Wood Funeral Home, 965 Home Plaza, Waterloo. In honor of Jesse, the family welcomes all who attend to wear their favorite NFL team apparel, or better yet, their best Steelers attire.

Jesse’s life was one of love, service, hard work, friendship, and helping others. He will be deeply missed and warmly remembered by all who had the privilege to know him.
