After losing his mother in 1970, he was raised by his great aunt and uncle, Ruth and J.W. Ammons. His uncle was a deacon in the church, so Larry found himself going to church almost every time the doors of the church were open.
When his aunt and uncle decided to move down south for health reasons, Larry told them he was surely going to miss them, but his church attendance would be at a minimum. Although Larry did not attend services every Sunday, he still believed in God and maintained his faith. Larry was a true friend, and his friends could always count on him regardless of their shortcomings..
He excelled at sports during his childhood and into high school at West High School in Waterloo, IA where he was on the football, wrestling and track teams. Larry was such a critical asset to the football team that in 1975 his football coach called him in from vacation so he could play in a game. After graduating he studied general studies at The University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Fall, Ia. Larry then went to work for Hawkeye Steal in Waterloo and then Viking Pump of Cedar Falls, Ia working in wielding and production in the plant retiring at the age of 62 years old after 25 years of dedicated service to the company. His retirement was not long lived; together with his beloved brother; Raymond Birden they owned and operated LnR Grill where you could locate them in various corners of Waterloo offering a variety of BBQ including ribs, hamburgers, polish, chicken and steak. When they were not grilling they were providing lawn care services in the community with their company LnR Lawn Care. When Larry had free time he enjoyed to keep up to date with the current world news on CNN and would wind down with the show Wheel of Fortune. He was a dynamic card player, and he excelled at Tunk and Spades; one of his favorite past times was watching his absolute favorite football team – The Las Vegas Raiders among his friends. Larry also enjoyed playing tennis and basketball in the Gates Park Summer Basketball League. Once Larry could not actively participate in the league, you could always find him under a shade tree in the summertime, sitting in his favorite sports chair watching the games. During his retirement years he was able to rekindle with family at reunions in his home state of North Carolina making cherished memories.
