Larry Herbert Simmons, a beloved figure in the Waterloo community, passed away on Saturday, November 29, 2025, at the age of 81. Born on April 2, 1944, at St. Francis Hospital, he was the cherished son of Lloyd and Dorothy (Munson) Simmons.

Larry grew up in Waterloo and graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1962. Shortly thereafter, he met the love of his life, Donnie McCarter, who would become his partner in life and adventure. The couple married on September 19, 1964, in Minnesota, and together they embraced the joys and challenges of parenthood, raising three children: Matthew, Kris, and Shelly. Larry faced profound loss when Donnie passed away in 2005, but the legacy of their love and family continued to thrive through their children and grandchildren.

For nearly four decades, Larry dedicated his professional life to John Deere, retiring in 2003 after an impressive tenure that included 30 years in the Foundry and nine years at Engine Works on Ridgeway. During times of financial strain for the company, Larry demonstrated great resilience, taking on various odd jobs to support his family, including assisting his father-in-law at the sand pits, often with his children by his side. His commitment to his family was unwavering and demonstrated through countless family vacations and camping trips, which created cherished memories.

An individual with a passion for the great outdoors, Larry and Donnie cherished their time at their cabin in Harpers Ferry on the Mississippi River. Whether it was boating, skiing, or floating the river, those moments were filled with joy. Larry particularly enjoyed fishing, even if his catches never made it home. His adventurous spirit also extended to fast cars, having once owned a Camaro and perhaps indulging in a bit of spirited driving. He hated asking for directions, and the kids often heard him jokingly declare, “Don’t make me pull this car over.”

Larry leaves behind a loving family, including his children: Matthew Simmons of Ft. Dodge, Kris Eiklenborg of Waterloo, and Shelly (Jim) Anderson-Harrison of Ft. Dodge. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Ryon (Meghan) Eiklenborg of Readlyn, Zachary (Becca) Anderson of Ft. Dodge, and Cooper (Courtney) Anderson, also of Ft. Dodge, as well as five great-grandchildren: Mason, Tristan, Issabella, Josephine, and Kinsley. He is further survived by his sister, Lois (Merle) Gleason of Waterloo; his brother-in-law, John McCarter of Dike; two sisters-in-law, Cathy (Ron) Brown of Cedar Falls and Nancy (Dave Zien) Judas of Cedar Falls; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and friends who loved him dearly.

Larry is preceded in death by his devoted wife, Donnie; his parents, Lloyd and Dorothy; one brother, Darwin Simmons; and his sister-in-law, Mary McCarter.
