Leeann Kay Cooksey (Breen) of Evansdale, IA, passed away peacefully in her sleep after bravely battling a long illness on Wednesday, October 15, 2025. She was 70 years old and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Born on December 11, 1954, to John and Audry (Wellman) Breen in Waterloo, IA, Leeann was a proud graduate of Waterloo West High School. Her commitment to service led her to join the United States Navy in 1972, where she not only served her country but also pursued her education, culminating in a bachelor's degree. During her ten years of dedicated service, she thrived as a recruiter. She was recognized with multiple honors, including the National Defense Service Medal, the Navy Good Conduct Medal, the Unit Commendation Medal, the First Gold Wreath Award, Silver Wreath Award, and the Navy Achievement Medal.

After her tenure with the Navy, Leeann continued to nurture her passion for literature and knowledge by working in the library on the Navy base. It was during one of these evenings in 1992, while out with friends, that she met Donald Cooksey, the love of her life. Their connection was immediate and profound; Donald proposed in front of the library, symbolizing a bond that would forever intertwine their lives. They celebrated their marriage on July 29, 1992. In a charming twist of fate, as their wedding rings had not yet arrived, Leeann creatively fashioned a temporary ring from a Don Juan Cigar's wrapping, which she wore with pride. This special cigar and its wrapper remain cherished mementos for Donald to this day.

In 1997, Leeann and Donald made the heartfelt decision to return to Iowa to be closer to her mother. Together, they welcomed two wonderful sons, David and Doug, who have continued to spread Leeann's legacy with their families. Throughout her years in Iowa, Leeann dedicated herself not only to her family but also to the Evansdale Public Library, where her love for books flourished.

Outside of her professional pursuits, Leeann found joy in a variety of hobbies, including gardening, reading, and making jewelry. However, her greatest passion was the unconditional love she bestowed upon her cherished fur babies, especially her cats. She was known for her nurturing spirit and her ability to make every cat feel welcome and adored.

Leeann is preceded in death by her parents, John and Audry Breen, and her sister, Lynn Breen. She is survived by her loving husband, Don Cooksey of Evansdale, IA; her two sons, David (Susan) Patterson and Doug (Oye) Patterson, both of Ocala, FL; along with six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren who will carry forward her loving spirit.

Per Leeann's wishes, there are no services scheduled at this time. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her as a symbol of love, creativity, and resilience.
