Roderick Cordell
Harrington
October 28, 1965 – May 28, 2026
Union Missionary Baptist Church of Waterloo
1:00 - 2:30 pm (Central time)
Roderick Cordell Harrington, a cherished husband, devoted father, loving grandfather, and proud veteran, passed away on May 28, 2026, at the age of 60. Born on October 28, 1965, in Iowa City, IA, to Robert Wright and Henrietta Harrington, Roderick’s life was once marked by dedication, love, and an unwavering commitment to his family and community.
A proud graduate of Waterloo Central High School’s Class of 1984, Roderick soon answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army. His time in the military was distinguished by admirable achievements, including the receipt of the Good Conduct Medal. Honorably discharged in November 1993, he carried out the values and discipline of his service throughout his life.
After his military career, Roderick worked at Premier Casting before finding a long-term position at Tysons, from which he retired in 2024. But beyond career accomplishments, it was his personal life that truly defined him. In 1997, fate led him to Geneatha Martin, a moment that marked the beginning of a beautiful journey. Though she initially laughed off his bold declaration, "You gonna be mine," persistence led to a strong, loving relationship. Eleven years later, on January 1, 2009, Roderick and Geneatha were married in a private home ceremony surrounded by family and their pastor. Roderick often affectionately called her his “Dream Girl,” a testament to the deep bond and unbreakable support they shared.
Roderick was a man of humor and kindness, whose joyful spirit and willingness to help others extended well beyond his family. Whether assisting neighbors with their trash cans, mowing yards, or shoveling snow, he gave without hesitation or complaint. A self-described homebody, his greatest joy came from being surrounded by those he loved.
Family was at the core of his existence. Roderick embraced the role of father figure to Geneatha’s children and was admired and respected by them all. His devotion extended to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, of whom he was incredibly proud, always encouraging and uplifting them.
A faithful member of St. Mark Baptist Church in Waterloo, Roderick’s spiritual life was as integral as his family ties. He was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed by those fortunate enough to know him.
Roderick is preceded in death by his grandparents; his uncle James Harrington; his aunts Ruth Thomas and Mabel Bradfield; cousin Tracey Harrington; and several other aunts and uncles.
He is lovingly survived by his wife, Geneatha Harrington of Waterloo, IA; his parents, Robert Wright and Henrietta Harrington both of Waterloo, IA; children John (Regina) Coffer of Ames, IA, Brion (Chassidy Martin) of Waterloo, IA, Riccondus Martin of Waterloo, IA, and Ashley Martin of Waterloo, IA; thirteen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four sisters, Sherry Harrington, Decedra Harrington, LaTonya Hart, Stephanie Commeck; three brothers, Anthony Harris, Marcus “Duke” Wright, and Raymond Burkett; aunt Elnora Parsons; uncles Charles Wright and Eric Harrington; father-in-law John Martin; numerous nieces and nephews; many brothers- and sisters-in-law; and countless family and friends who were touched by his generosity and warmth.
A Home Going Service to celebrate Roderick’s life will be held on Friday, June 12, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Union Missionary Baptist Church, located at 209 Jackson St, Waterloo, IA 50703. Military rites honoring Roderick’s service will be conducted by the Waterloo Amvets and the United States Army Funeral Honor Guard immediately following the service.
Roderick Cordell Harrington’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and a true testament to a life well-lived and a soul deeply loved. His presence will be missed but forever cherished in the hearts of those he leaves behind.
