Steven James
Giblin
Oct 18, 1953 — Aug 13, 2026
Steven James Giblin, affectionately known as “Gib” 72, of Waterloo, Iowa, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2026, due to complications from diabetes. He was born on October 18, 1953, in Waterloo, Iowa, to Phyllis and James Giblin. Steve graduated from Columbus High School in 1972.
Steve was married to Anita Snyder on August 19, 1977, and they later divorced. Together they had two children, Sara Schwankl and Luke Giblin, both of Colorado. Steve later married Christy Schmitt, and through that marriage welcomed and loved her children, Amber Berry and April Frisch, into his life. They later divorced.
He is survived by his children, Sara and Luke; his grandchildren, Jacob, Sydney, and Lliam; his siblings, Tom and Marlene of Waterloo, Larry of Eugene, Oregon, Craig of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Karen Donovan of South Bend, Indiana; and many nieces and nephews.
Steve will be remembered for his independent spirit, loyal and supportive friends, sense of humor, artistic and imaginative eye, and his love of the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, loved reminiscing about “the good old days”, and treasured memories of playing basketball and spending time fishing with his siblings and family. A gifted painter, Steve worked independently for much of his life, painting for various companies, homes, and businesses. He had a unique ability to transform spaces and took great pride in the work he completed. Above all, Steve loved his children deeply; they were a lasting source of pride and lived proudly in his heart throughout his life.
Steve is entrusted to God’s care, where his family prays that he may find peace and rest in God’s presence. May those who knew him remember the good moments, the stories, and the unique person he was.
To all of Steve’s loyal friends who shared fond memories with him and supported him with love and care until his final days, if you close your eyes and imagine sitting next to him fishing, you can still hear him say, “the walleyes are biting.” His family is deeply grateful for their kindness and presence in his life.
A Celebration of Life for Steve will be held at a later date. Family and friends will be invited to gather together to remember Steve, share stories, and celebrate the life he lived. Details will be shared when arrangements have been finalized.
